Austin in January 2018: Free Local Concerts, an MLK March and a Tattoo Festival

Welcome to 2018! Enjoy some black eyed peas, celebrate those you love and look forward to another great year.

January might otherwise be a pretty quiet month for events, but, for that specific reason, the city celebrates its local musicians during Free Week. That’s when a bunch of local bands play free shows to be heard by new audiences, support bars that go through a seasonal slump and celebrate the spirit of the Live Music Capital of the World.

Meanwhile, there’s an annual march to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Dell’s annual gala to raise money for children.

Whatever you and those close to you go after this month, we hope you have a safe and festive holiday season and a grand start to the New Year. Now, let’s check out the lineup.

January 1-8

No question, The Live Music Capital of the World has too many great local bands for most of us to keep track of — let alone see live. And it can also get a little expensive to do on a nighly basis. Enter Free Week. It’s a week’s worth of concerts at clubs across Austin where you won’t find any cover charges.

When: All week
Where: Venues citywide

After the march, you and your family can hang out on campus for the MLK Community Festival, which includes live music, food, drinks, crafts and more. And considering bringing along a nonperishable food item to donate to the Capital Area Food Bank. Also, consider checking out the MLK Youth Scholarship Awards.

One of the most impactful things Dell has done, beyond its technologies, is supporting the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Texas. It provides a wide variety of healthcare for thousands of kids throughout Central Texas. And each year it has the Dell Children’s Gala to help raise funds to help children in need. It’s among the most sophisticated of Austin charity events, featuring a cocktail reception, dinner, live and silent auctions, a charitable casino and live music. You can attend the whole evening or check out the after-party.

When: 6 p.m.
Where: Austin Convention Center, 500 E Cesar Chavez St.
