Courtyard: Watersports on Lake Austin and Award-Winning Tennis
Perched on the bluffs bounded by Lake Austin, Bull Creek, and Capital of Texas Highway, The Courtyard is a compact waterfront community with an award-winning tennis club and beautiful luxury homes. Residents also enjoy a private boat dock on Bull Creek and easy access to all the watersports and fun on Lake Austin.
Conveniently located, the neighborhood is 15 minutes northwest of downtown Austin and 25 minutes from the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. In addition to all of the recreational amenities, Courtyard residents are well placed to enjoy a tremendous variety of shopping and dining opportunities.
The award-winning Courtyard Tennis Club, a private club located at the center of The Courtyard neighborhood, includes a tennis complex with 14 outdoor and two indoor hard courts — the only indoor hard courts in Austin. Tennis professionals offer lessons to members of the club, which also boasts a beautiful junior-Olympic pool and baby pool.

Outdoors enthusiasts appreciate having their own private community park, as well as hiking and biking trails that wind through green spaces. Boaters love the neighborhood marina that allows direct access to recreation and fishing on Bull Creek and Lake Austin.
“We have a beautiful park on the creek that is private to our community,” says Cathleen Barrett, a four-year resident of the neighborhood. “It’s one of those jewels that people don’t know about. In fact, some neighbors even launch kayaks from the park.”
For a change of pace, neighbors looking for outdoor exercise or a place to walk the dog head to Bull Creek District Park and Greenbelt, a 48-acre green space with popular mountain-biking trails, rocks for bouldering, relaxing picnic areas, and more, just minutes from The Courtyard.
“We have a beautiful private wooded community park along Bull Creek — walking paths, a pier that people fish and swim from, benches to just sit and enjoy the quiet and beauty,” says Leslie Craven, president of the board of directors of The Courtyard Homeowners’ Association, which organizes social events and celebrations throughout the year.
An Established Neighborhood with Highly Regarded Schools
Construction in The Courtyard began in 1979 and continued through 2005. Many of the older homes have been updated or remodeled to include modern amenities. Courtyard homes vary widely in size and price. Many of the higher-priced homes easily exceed $1 million and feature their own private boat docks on Bull Creek, which feeds into the constant-level Lake Austin.
The area’s highly regarded schools in the Austin Independent School District make The Courtyard a popular choice for families. Students attend Highland Park Elementary, Lamar Middle School and McCallum High School. In 2011, Highland Park was rated “Exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency, and McCallum High is home to one of Austin’s fine arts academies.
“Courtyard is an established neighborhood,” says Craven. “Because of its geographical location — bordered by the creek and by two major roads — there are no surprises about how things will develop over time. Courtyard is a destination, not a ‘pass through’ neighborhood. This helps keep our streets quiet with fairly low traffic volume.”
Serving Up a Friendly Neighborhood Lifestyle
A man patiently watches his teenage son practice serve after serve at the Courtyard Tennis Club. Thanks to natural talent and easy access to the championship tennis facility situated in the neighborhood, the youngster is a tennis prodigy, possibly heading for a professional career in the sport, and dad is happy to give him all the warm-up time he needs.
After practice, the father and son jump in the club’s pool to cool off and discuss tomorrow’s plans. Their entire family has been invited out on the lake by their retired neighbors, who have just purchased a new ski boat.
“You run into your neighbors a lot,” says Barrett. “We go out to dinner, get together at each others’ homes, and see each other at the park all the time.”
Privacy with an Abundant Sense of Community
Folks who live in the Courtyard enjoy the compact, quiet character of their tight-knit neighborhood. The tennis players here are proud of the top-rated tennis facilities and appreciate the luxury of having the sport they love so much as part of their daily lifestyle.
Other neighbors value the easy access to Lake Austin and Bull Creek — kayaking is a favorite activity of many neighbors, who store their boats in creek-side lockers in the neighborhood park. The park, beloved by Courtyard residents and exclusively for their own use, is a community gathering spot for year-round celebrations and events. They like its convenience and beauty.
Most of all, the neighbors like each other. “I’m not exaggerating,” says Barrett. “I’ve not met anyone here who isn’t friendly and welcoming. This is a great, great neighborhood.”
