Sure, school is back in session and life seems a little busier in September. But that doesn’t mean that Austin’s love of fun subsides.
You can pack your calendar with top-notch comedy events, hit up any number of great concerts and take the family out for a day of free entry to local museums and cultural attractions.
So don’t let these shorter days slow you down, Austin never stops providing great options if you’re in the mood to get out and about.
Here are some of the best events going on in town this month:
September 1: Dozens of top-notch Austin musicians will be out playing concerts at places like Whole Foods, Strange Brew Coffee and the Continental Club to help raise money for fellow musicians. HAAM Benefit Day is an avenue for all kinds of businesses to help support the city’s world-renowned music scene.

September 1-7: Get your laugh on. The Out of Bounds Comedy Festival has dozens of standup and improv acts to get you giggling. The fest brings in comedians from across the country. It’s in its 13th year, and there are roughly 500 performers and 120 comedy shows spread across the week.

September 7: Dive in at the feet of the SRV Statue on Lady Bird Lake, hop on a cycle and pedal your way through downtown and then run it out to the finish line. The Tri-Rock Austin Triathlon is in its ninth year, and it brings in athletes from all over the place. The event promises to be a fun one to watch, or if you’re ready, compete in.

September 7: It’s a day of free yoga classes at studios throughout the Austin area. Not every studio is involved — but dozens are. If you’ve ever wanted to give yoga a try, this is a great opportunity. If you’ve done it for years, it’s a chance to check out new studios and instructors. There is a wide variety of classes, some catering to families others targeting more experienced people.

September 19: Do you love the hops? Do you dig the grains? How about a nice stout? The Texas Craft Brewers Festival will have about a zillion various of almost any kind of beer you can think of. Tickets run about $30, although there are several levels of exclusivity.

September 20: Even if you’ve hit a few museums in the Austin area, chances are you haven’t seen them all or the latest installations and exhibitions. Austin Museum Day is designed to get you up to speed without spending a cent. With more than 40 museums and activities available, nearly everyone will be able to find something that interests them. Among a few highlights, the LBJ Presidential Library, which has a Beatles exhibit currently; the Blanton Museum of Art; and the Texas Governor’s Mansion.

September 26 & 27: Arts and crafts, oh my. The Old Pecan Street Festival, held twice a year on what used to be Pecan Street and is now known as Sixth Street, features hundreds of artists, craft makers and vendors. It’s one of the longest-running events of its kind in the nation. The event benefits a wide variety of organizations.
