Championship Golf by the Numbers
With two 18-hole courses, Balcones Golf Course and Spicewood Golf Course, golfers have an enviable choice of challenges whenever they feel like playing golf.
Spicewood Golf Course is a part of Balcones Country Club, but it sits about a mile away. The Spicewood course is noted for dramatic, technically difficult elevation changes. The course length is 6,769 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71.8 and it has a slope rating of 116 on Bermuda grass. Designed by Bob Cotton, the Spicewood golf course opened in 1975.
On the other hand, the Balcones course, also designed by legend Bob Cotton and opened in 1957, has an unmatchable history and a certain grandeur. The 18-hole Balcones course features 6,360 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 70. The course rating is 69.9 and it has a slope rating of 114, also on Bermuda grass.
The club offers a variety of tournament packages including the Deluxe Package, Eagle Package, Birdie Package and the Shotgun Special. Tournaments are usually held to raise money for charities, as business perks, or as large social events. A minimum number of players are required for each package starting at 24 players up to a minimum of 72 players for the Shotgun Special.
State-of-the-Art Instruction and Special Events
The Golf Academy is available to golfers of all ages and skills. You can attend a two-day golf crash course, daily clinics, beginners-or ladies-only golf schools, junior golf camps and clinics as well as hire private instruction from certified pros. The facilities include a classroom with state-of-the-art swing analysis technology. There is also a driving range, a short-game area and a putting green. Balcones Country Club is one of the best places in town for golfers at any skill level to improve their game, and have a good time doing it.
Tennis Lessons, clinics and leagues are another important facet of the club. There are also monthly special matches such as the “Post Valentine’s Day Play Night,”“Spring Banquet at Spicewood,” “Halloween Play Night and Mixer” and the “Holiday Banquet.”
Open to all levels of players, there are also junior programs and junior tennis summer camps. Cardio-Tennis, when you really want to feel the burn, is offered on Thursdays from 7-8 PM or Sundays from 9-10AM. Set to cool workout beats, Cardio-Tennis combines a constant motion and tennis.

Membership to Balcones Country Club is by invitation only; a current club member must sponsor your application. With golf, tennis, swimming and other sport “Clubs within the Club” there is an active atmosphere inviting athletes and sports enthusiasts to call the club their home-away-from-home.
The “Clubs within a Club” program is a wonderful concept that keeps growing each year. Some clubs include the Balcones Women’s Association, Biking Club, Bible Study Club, Book Club, BCC Poker Club, Card & Game Club, Balcones Prosperity Group, and the Running Club. The Clubhouse features meeting rooms, a ballroom, and the Balcones Rio Grande Restaurant, the member’s dining room. The more casual Balcones 8600 Club offers a great variety of lunch and dinner items as well as quick snacks for players stopping in during a round of golf.
Balcones Country Club is known as a magical location for weddings, corporate events and personal milestones. The Ballroom can hold up to 200 guests and there are several wedding packages to choose from or you can design your own, personal customizedwedding or reception.
Corporate meetings, seminars, holiday parties, family gatherings, graduation parties, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, anniversary parties and retirement parties are held here under the watchful care of the gracious and attentive staff.
