Retail Roundup: University Hills Area Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

The new and developing Mueller Retail Center, less than 10 minutes away, is already a popular destination for the residents of University Hills. Though the center is still under construction, it already features stores such as a deluxe HEB grocery, Home Depot, Old Navy, Marshalls, Rue 21, Lane Bryant, DOTS, The Children’s Place, Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Staples, PetSmart, Wells Fargo Bank, and more.

There are five other major shopping centers within 15 minutes or less of University Hills including the Domain, Arboretum at Great Hills, Shops at Arbor Walk, Gateway, and Barton Creek Square Mall. All together, these five shopping centers represent about 400 fine department stores, retailers, restaurants and movie theaters.

Mainstream and Specialty Groceries Galore

University Hills residents grocery shop at either the nearby HEB in the Springdale Shopping Center or the brand new, upscale Mueller HEB under 10 minutes away. There are also well-established specialty groceries and mini-grocery markets in the community.

There are delicious treasures not found at many mainstream markets at the full-service El Rancho Supermercado, which specializes in imported Mexican foods and features a full line of grocery, produce, dairy, meat, and other products. Also, the neighborhood is convenient to Arlen’s Market, La Michoacán Meat Market, Eastside Grocery, Gaston Food Market, and Capital Meats, Inc.

Fabulous Food, Delicious Drinks and a Drive-in Movie

Nearby restaurants include Chipotle Grill, Papa John’s, Which Wich, Jamba Juice, and locally owned favorites such as Verts Kebap, Boneheads, and Tino’s Greek Café. And inevitably for coffee and tea lovers there is a popular Starbucks. At the south side of the new Mueller development, several fresh and exciting food trucks feature a variety of delicious food. One of the trailers, Short BusSubs offers delicious sandwiches on fresh, made-from-scratch bread. The Teacher’s Pet — with turkey, bacon, cream cheese, avocado, tomato and onion is a favorite with many frequent diners. With construction continuing at a brisk pace throughout the Mueller shopping center, there will be scores of more exciting shops and restaurants opening continually throughout the next couple of years.

On weekends, residents enjoy the unique and funky Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-in, an outdoor movie theater that sells yummy snacks. The Galaxy 10 Theater, a little less than 10 minutes away, offers Hollywood fare in a conventional theater.

Delectable Tex-Mex in a Fun, Relaxed Atmosphere

At the northeastern corner of University Hills, Tres Amigos Cantina has been a neighborhood favorite for a few decades. Their delectable Tex-Mex dishes and fun, relaxed atmosphere are great for the whole family. At happy hour, many patrons enjoy house specialty margaritas flavored with mango, strawberry, sangria, peach, black raspberry, melon or pomegranate.

Tres Amigos’ fabulous fajita quesadillas are served on giant flour tortillas with tender beef or chicken and melted jack and cheddar cheese, and are accompanied by sides of guacamole and sour cream. Patrons also love the signature Tres Amigos plate. It consists of a delicious puffy beef taco, a tender beef enchilada with chile sauce, a handmade tamale, Spanish rice, refried beans, and guacamole. Tres Amigos’ convenient location, great food, and comfortable atmosphere keep it popular among the residents in University Hills and their neighbors.
