It’s easy to get lost in a zig-zagging maze of 7-foot-tall corn. But, strangely enough, it’s that playful fear of being lost — and maybe even a little freaked out — that keeps people coming back to corn mazes across Central Texas.
Several such mazes — plus pumpkin patches, hayrides and more — are within an hour drive of downtown Austin.
Here’s a look at a few of the most popular spots.
Barton Hill Farms: Corn maze, pumpkin patch, brews, food and fun. They’ve packed pretty much everything in out at Barton Hill Farms. This year’s maze features a Texas Longhorn and the words “Go Horns.” Of course, you won’t know that while you’re lost inside. The maze is fun for kids all the time, and older (braver) folks can head out with a flashlight from dusk until 10 p.m. They also have pumpkins, pumpkin painting and, of course, pumpkin pie. Other food and beverage is also for sale. It’s $8 for kids ages 3-10. It’s $11, otherwise.

Elgin CHRISTmas Tree Farm: Yes, they sell a lot of Christmas trees. But they also have a pumpkin patch and other fall goodies. During the second and third weekends of October, the farm opens up for its Pumpkin Festivals. Parents can kick back and enjoy some live music and food while kids paint pumpkins, run around mazes and participate in other games. It’s $6 for kids ages 2-12 and $8 for those who are older.

Evergreen Farms: Yes, it’s also a Christmas tree farm. But they get in the fall spirit, too. You’ve heard of Easter egg hunts. So why not try out a pumpkin hunt? They take you out on a wagon ride into the tree fields where mini pumpkins are hidden. Afterwards, decorate the little gourds and join in some of the games.
Location: 242 Monkey Rd, Elgin, TX 78621
Sweet Berry Farm: Stuff your own scarecrow, get lost in a maze and get creative with a pumpkin. Sweet Berry Farm features a 4-acre corn maze shaped like the state of Texas. They don’t charge an entrance fee, but each activity has its own price. For example, a Scarecrow Island Hayride is $3.75. And $16.50 lets you assemble your own scarecrow.
