Dining and Dancing at ‘The Nut’

Founders of the Nutty Brown Café & Amphitheater set out to be the “Hill Country headquarters for outstanding live music, great food and good times,” and they’ve made good on their ambition. The place is known for its iconic neon cowboy sign and plentiful portions of classic comfort foods like chicken fried steak, Kevin Fowler Frito Pie, and “Big Daddy” burgers. And they take great pride at the Nutty Brown in never letting a customer leave hungry or unhappy.

Big Fun for the Little Ones

Austinite Kelly King frequents Nutty Brown regularly because of the kid-friendly atmosphere, the great music, and delicious comfort food. The café offers a weekly “Kid’s Night” event on Tuesdays with all kinds of special activities just for kids.

“I’ve been going to Nutty Brown Cafe for around 3 years. It is one of my favorite restaurants–great big shady patio, yummy food, good drinks, live music, wonderful service, and it’s fun for kids too,” King said. “We love going on kid’s night for the inexpensive kid’s meals, balloon animals, bouncy house, gigantic sand box, and bands playing children’s songs. We relax on the patio while the kids have a blast! It has all of the things I love about Austin: Tex-Mex, live music, and a laid-back atmosphere.”

Live Music and Majestic Oaks

Nutty Brown hosts a popular “Live Jazz Brunch” every Sunday from 10am-2pm featuring breakfast standards and gourmet dishes, as well as special prices on Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Jazz musicians provide entertainment while Cheeto, a boisterous macaw who lives in a cage outside, greets patrons as they come and go.

Although Nutty Brown serves good food at reasonable prices, many people who frequent “The Nut,” as it’s lovingly nicknamed, do so for the incredible Hill Country atmosphere and friendly vibe.

Darla Putzier loves Nutty Brown for the music and majestic oaks. “It’s like being in your backyard,” Putzier said. “The trees are amazing. You can relax and enjoy the live music with your friends and a cold drink.”

An expansive deck built under the incredible canopy of live oaks is the crown jewel of the café and live music venue. An amazing outdoor amphitheater with two stages welcomes Texas musicians Friday through Sunday, and there’s plenty of room to cut a rug two-stepping under the stars with your sweetie.

Old Favorites, New Talent and Memorable Experiences

“The Nut” draws old favorites and new talent, bringing musicians from all over the state and beyond, including Cory Morrow, Randy Rogers Band, Dwight Yoakam, Blake Shelton, Charlie Robison, and Clint Walker, among others. The amphitheater is home to the annual “Fowler Fest,” a music festival featuring Kevin Fowler, alongside some of the hottest Texas musicians in the business. In warmer months, Nutty Brown has been host to countless series of summer music concerts, offering free live music and memorable experiences to fans of all ages.
