Retail Roundup: Mountain City Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Shopping is a snap for real estate owners in Mountain City. Nearby Kyle and Buda both offer plenty of options for dining, shopping and entertainment. In recent years, development of Kyle Crossing, The Village at Kyle and Kyle Marketplace have produced more than 2 million square feet of retail and commercial real estate at one intersection alone. Anchor stores include popular retailers and stores such as Kohl’s, Target, Lowe’s and HEB Plus.

More extensive shopping is available at the San Marcos Outlet Malls, about 20 minutes away, or locals also have the option of taking the short drive to Austin to visit one of its many malls – like Southpark Meadows, about 15 minutes from home. Southpark Meadows is a 99-store shopping center with 29 places to eat. The center features many popular retailers including SuperTarget, Walmart, Ross, JC Penney, Marshall’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sports Authority, Hobby Lobby, Sam’s Club and a 14-screen Cinemark movie theater along with a host of restaurants and fast food chains. Southpark Meadows also has outdoor picnic areas, a popular playground, and a small amphitheater where local musicians play concerts the whole family can enjoy.

And when Mountain City homeowners want to enjoy a meal out, Kyle has a several great restaurants. Two of the most popular eateries in town are Matt’s Pit Barbeque and Veggytopia – a great representation of the staggering variety of restaurants in town. Matt’s Pit is famous for its combinations of smoked meats, while Veggytopia is famous for its delicious assortment of vegetarian and vegan foods. Among the scores of other popular places are Bailey’s Burgers, Cuervo’s Flauteria, and the charming bakery Texas Pie Company.

Mountain City students attend Hays Consolidated Independent School District which exceeded all of the standards goals set by the Texas Education Agency in its 2013 accountability report. The school district is clearly doing something right. A “best practice” developed in Hays CISD for an accountability calendar that leads from PSAT administration to AP enrollment, has been recognized by the College Board and is being recommended for use in school districts nationwide. The district also offers students a performing arts center and an extensive list of extracurricular activities.

The area also has a quality healthcare infrastructure. Nearby Kyle, about five minutes away, features a wealth of medical resources for Mountain City residents. Kyle’s Seton Medical Center Hayes is an 84-bed general medical and surgical hospital. Other medical service providers in Kyle include Texas Urgent Care, Central Texas Medical Associates.

“We have an admirable school district, a privately owned water system and limited entrances to the neighborhoods making it a low crime area,” says Beth Smith. “Although there is no HOA, the homes in the neighborhoods and ranches are quite beautiful. I absolutely love living here.”
