“We’ve got some real jewels in this neighborhood — the large lots, the heritage trees,” says Kata Carbone, a 29-year resident of the neighborhood. “There’s a nice mix of generations, too.”

Shoalmont is an active neighborhood that combines outdoor and indoor recreation.
Located on Northland Drive, the nearby Northwest Recreation Center hosts year-round programs, classes and activities for all age groups. The offerings include dance, sports, fitness programs, teen and youth afterschool options, day camp programs, and special events. The facilities feature a playscape, large multi-purpose grass field, sand volleyball court, disc golf course, horseshoe court, covered pavilion and picnic tables and grills.
Crestmont Park offers another green space to Shoalmont residents between Hancock Branch Creek and Crestmont, east of Woodview and south of the Hancock Library. Locals often enjoy taking the footbridge at the end of 49th Street for a scenic byway to the park. The neighborhood’s section of the Shoal Creek Greenbelt provides a delightful hike-and-bike trail along Shoal Creek Boulevard from close to Allandale Road south to the Seiders Springs pavilion area.
The neighborhood likes to party, too. The annual springtime party draws close to 300 people, says Joe Reynolds, who’s lived in Shoalmont since 1979. “Everyone joins in the potluck. It’s a good time and a great party.”
Convenient Shopping, Dining and Schools
Situated just north of downtown Austin, Shoalmont homeowners enjoy a wide variety of great choices for shopping, dining and entertainment. The numbers are eye-popping. Shoalmont’s central location positions homeowners to reach nine major shopping centers in 15 minutes or less. Together, these shopping centers host almost 600 stores and restaurants.
Homeowners are also attracted to the well-regarded schools. Children in Shoalmont attend schools in the Austin Independent School District, including Gullet or Highland Park elementary, both of which have been rated “Exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency. Middle-schoolers go to Lamar, and high school kids attend McCallum, which boasts an acclaimed Fine Arts Academy.
“Shoalmont is close to downtown; we have great access,” says Carbone. “Everything is right here.”
A Glimpse into the Shoalmont Lifestyle
A high-tech software programmer takes a lunchtime break from her work to enjoy an energetic dance class at Northwest Recreation Center. As she moves and grooves to the music, she smiles at her friend, a neighbor in their Shoalmont neighborhood, who’s taking the class with her. Her friend smiles back, thankful her two children are tucked safely away in school, giving her some mommy time.
This weekend, the software engineer will enjoy a fun night out with other neighbors — they’ve got reservations at a hot new neighborhood restaurant, and then they’ll enjoy some live music downtown. Her dance class companion, meanwhile, plans to reward her sons’ hard work at school with a walk through beautiful Crestmont Park. On the way, they’ll stop at Yarborough library, where each boy can check out a book and a video, and then they’ll meet their father for an afternoon picnic in the park featuring dad’s excellent grilled lime-cilantro chicken. After dinner, the kids hope to organize a kickball game with other neighbor kids.
“We try to make sure it’s a neighborhood,” says Reynolds. “We still have front porches and people still sit on them, watching the kids outside playing.”
Friendly Neighbors and a Great Sense of Community
Shoalmont neighbors appreciate the proximity to the city center of their northcentral Austin community. They are glad for the convenience of nearby thoroughfares that make getting around effortless. The community enjoys its access to Northwest Recreation Center where neighbors play, eat and socialize. Homeowners also love the funky, mid-century modern charm of their neighborhood. “It’s a nice, quiet neighborhood,” says Carbone, a retired technical writer. “We have a great sense of community. We take casseroles to new mothers. We welcome new neighbors with a plate of cookies.”
“We try to take care of each other and watch out for each other,” adds Reynolds.
