Whether you’d like to own a farm, ranch or residential real estate with plenty of fresh air and wide-open spaces, Thorndale’s got it. A small town in Milam County, Thorndale is conveniently located near several larger cities. But it’s the charming, quiet rural life of Thorndale that locals love. With a population of 1,336, residents can get to downtown Austin or the Austin Bergstrom International Airport in just 50 minutes, while Taylor and Rockport are each just over 10 minutes away.

“Thorndale is a very quiet and peaceful town,” says Esteban Zuniga who was born and raised in the community. “There is nothing quite like waking up and stepping outside for that clean country air. Even if you were to buy real estate in the middle of the town, everything in Thorndale is serene. There is only one traffic light in town if you can believe that. It is one place in Texas that it is hard not to be noticed because everyone knows everyone else. It is truly home; even when you are driving, the other drivers will always wave at you. It is a warm and friendly city to this day.”

A Rich History of Railroads and Cotton, a Bright Future of Good Kids and Highly Rated Schools

Thorndale was established in 1878; shortly after the International-Great Northern Railroad was built through the community. An employee of the railroad named the town after the area’s plentiful “thorny” vegetation, mesquite thorn, prickly pear and sagebrush. In the late 1870s, a post office, general store and a hotel were built as real estate development began.

The area’s economy was mainly agricultural and Thorndale served as a shipping and supply point for area farmers. In 1913, the Thorndale Independent School District was formed. Thorndale was incorporated in 1929 with its economy thriving and population growing. But then, the Great Depression created a crisis in Thorndale and many real estate owners left and the population dropped from 1,500 to just under 1,000. During the mid-1950s through present day, the population has been growing at a very slow, yet steady pace.

For such a small town, there are plenty of children in Thorndale. The Thorndale Independent School District serves nearly 600 students in the elementary, middle and high schools. The student-teacher ratio is remarkable-11.5 students per teacher. This low ratio of students to teachers is one of the reasons the district exceeded all of the goals set by the Texas Education Agency in its 2013 school accountability assessment.

Go Fishing and Swimming, Dance to Live Music or Have a Picnic in the Park

The City Park in Thorndale is a very popular community hotspot for outdoor recreation. As the traditional site of Thorndale’s annual BBQ cook-off and festivities, City Park features baseball fields and the city swimming pool – a favorite summertime destination for the entire family.

Next door in Taylor, there are two parks residents enjoy visiting, Murphy Park and Fannie Robinson Park. Murphy Park spreads over 120 acres of real estate and features playgrounds, a fishing pond, hike and bike trails, and bird watching. Fannie Robinson Park covers 55 acres with hike and bike trails, ball courts, swimming pools, picnic areas, pavilion and playscapes.

Local music lovers enjoy the events held at the Apache Pass Amphitheater and Festival Grounds, five miles north of Thorndale. The outdoor music venue hosts a number of major events including musical festivals and Nocturnal Wonderland – one of the largest electronic music festivals in the United States.
