Grey Rock Golf Club: A Jay Morrish Masterpiece

Since the Grey Rock Golf Course opened in Austin in 1992, its popularity has soared. Located just 20 minutes southwest of downtown Austin in the picturesque Texas Hill Country, Grey Rock has been recognized as one of the top 20 public golf courses in Texas by Texas Golfer magazine.

Designed by master course designer Jay Moorish, the course offers over 160 acres of natural beauty. With 6,859 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72, the course rating is 72.7 with a slope rating of 122.

With a friendly, knowledgeable staff, both members and guests feel at home in what is referred to as “easygoing elegance.” Turkey, deer and over 40 species of birds reside in the course’s wooded surroundings, making the golf club a wonderful place to experience the endless beauty of nature.

Advanced Instruction for Total Golf Performance

Grey Rock is known as one of the most advanced golf instruction centers in Austin. The club pursues a team approach in helping clients attain “total golf performance” including instruction on club fitting, pain and injury prevention, and golf fitness. The Golf Performance Center at The Grey Rock Golf Academy was created for help with golf-specific fitness; it also offers sports medicine and nutrition education and guidance. Paul Hendricks is director of the Performance Center; Robert Bradshaw is in charge of the fitness and nutrition division. All employees at the performance center have outstanding credentials and vast knowledge in their fields.

The Grey Rock Golf Academy offers a multitude of golf lessons — private or group — for beginning players and recreational golfers in all age groups, as well as professionals. Group lessons for adults include a co-ed clinic, which is open to players of all levels; there is also a senior clinic and beginner ladies clinic available. Members are even free to create their own clinic — a novel idea for networking, family reunions and business related functions. Sound interesting? The staff will help plan your next event, whether it’s for business or pleasure.

The club has a number of programs aimed at helping younger golfers develop their game. Little Linksters (for 5- to 6-year-olds) offers a basic introduction to the game of golf. Par Level is a fun approach for junior players 7 years and older. Birdie Level is designed for intermediate players ages 8 and up. Eagle Level is designed to improve the games of intermediate to advanced players, ages 9 and up. Ace Level is for junior golfers ages 9 and older who are playing tournament golf.

Tennis Too

For tennis lovers, the private Grey Rock Tennis Club shares the same entrance as the golf club, offering members eight state-of-the-art lighted courts. The tennis club also offers private and group lessons.

Phenomenal Facilities with a Menu of Events

The magnificent two-story limestone clubhouse of Grey Rock overlooks the 18th hole and scenic lake. Surrounded by mature trees, the front porch is a welcoming sight. The 4,000-foot clubhouse has two giant fireplaces, and includes a pro shop and the Rock Grill & Biergarten. The atmosphere is so cozy and comfortable, sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to leave.

The Rock Grill & Biergarten is a hub for many of Grey Rock’s members and visitors. With its own huge fireplace, it is always warm and inviting, with a chic bar and several widescreen TVs throughout. Specialties of the Rock Grill include barbeque-smoked meats slowly cooked in-house to tender perfection. Other options are breakfast tacos, grab-and-go snacks, and a variety of other delicious menu items. The Biergarten is a simply stunning outdoor area with a stand of mature trees providing shade and ambiance.

Nestled near the lake and 18th hole, the Live Oak Patio features an open pit fireplace and is often the site of lunches or dinners following golf events. The patio can seat as many as 200 guests, making it an ideal spot for meetings, parties, and family gatherings.

More Than Just Great Golf

The Grey Rock Golf Club hosts private events such as weddings and banquets among the club’s lush, beautiful surroundings. A professional coordinator aids in selection of the decor and menu. With a sensational setting and superior service, the club can arrange exclusive use of the Biergarten or outdoor Live Oak Patio, as well as rooms for dining.

With a variety of tournaments scheduled every month, the calendar is full of events. The club’s Men’s Golf Association (MGA) is known as one of the best in Austin. There are also tournaments for charity and private tournaments for members. With senior mixers, social events, poker nights, live music nights and beer tasting events, the Grey Rock Golf Club is about more than the fabulous golf course and the great game itself; it is about a lifestyle treasured by both members and visitors.
