Retail Roundup: Windsor Park Area Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

With its convenient access to restaurants, shopping, entertainment, downtown and the airport, Windsor Park is one of the most affordable and charming neighborhoods in Central Austin.

There are already many new stores, restaurants, and shopping destinations open in the developing Mueller area less than five minutes from home. Some of the merchants include Marshall’s, Staples, Home Depot, PetSmart, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, Chair King, Best Buy and a new, deluxe HEB for groceries. A few of the restaurants among the many already open at or near the Mueller Retail Center are Pad Thai, Tino’s Greek Café, VertsKebap, How Do You Roll Sushi, and Chipotle.

There are also plenty of other convenient places to shop nearby. In addition to a new Target at Capital Plaza shopping center — adjacent on the west edge of the neighborhood — there are four major shopping malls within a quick 15 to 20 minute drive, including the Arboretum, Gateway Shopping Center, The Domain and Barton Creek Square Mall. Together, these retail centers include over 350 stores and restaurants.

Grilled Ruby Trout and Sumptuous Steaks

Windsor Park is centrally located, making Austin’s downtown shopping, dining and nightlife very convenient. But when residents are seekinga delicious meal a little closer to home, many often choose the Eastside Café. Eastside Café has held its ground on the east side of I-35 longer than almost any other restaurant with the quality to draw diners not just from the neighborhood, but from all over town.

The Eastside Café has made its name with a menu that offers everything from healthy vegetarian meals to sumptuous steaks — all benefitting from the longtime Eastside Café herb and vegetable garden beside the restaurant. Other popular dishes on the menu are grilled ruby trout and enchiladas. Many diners return just to order the grilled meatloaf topped with Shiner Bock tomato bacon sauce. The all-natural beef meatloaf comes with soup or salad and fresh vegetables.

Drive-in Movies and A Menu of Local Foodie Favorites

The Windsor Park area has a tremendous number ofrestaurants, with Cherrywood Coffee House serving delicious burgers, po’boys, sandwiches, tacos, and other fresh, well-prepared, unpretentious food. The owners’ New Orleans roots really shine in the hearty, authentic muffaletta sandwiches. On nearby Manor Road, Mi Madre’s and El Chilito serve Mexican food, and Hoover’s Homestyle Cooking serves Southern-style fare such as barbeque, meatloaf, burgers, catfish and delicious chicken fried steak with cream gravy.

Corona Café is a quaint coffee shop located in the heart of the neighborhood. Right next door to the Corona Café, the Nomad Bar provides a warm and welcoming ambiance for happy hours and is a fun place to gather with friends on the weekend.

Speaking of weekends, residents enjoy the unique and funky Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In, an outdoor movie theater that sells yummy snacks. Movie buffs who prefer an indoor experience frequent the Galaxy 10 Theater, less than five minutes away, which offers Hollywood fare in a conventional theater.
