Bryker Woods offers a choice between convenient local businesses and easy access to premier districts for dining, entertainment, and shopping.
Just minutes away, HEB’s upscale Central Market is a popular choice for most grocery shopping. Central Market is one of Austin’s leading purveyors of fresh produce, gourmet cheeses and wine, grass-fed beef, and a huge inventory of both staples and fine groceries. Central Market complements its shopping experience with cooking classes, free concerts on the patio, a café with outdoor seating, and a large and popular playground. Residents also frequently shop at a Randalls grocery adjacent to the neighborhood.
Shop Local or National Brands
Local businesses offer a variety of goods and services, including some that aren’t so easy to find anymore. The 35th Street area boasts several home interiors stores, both new and vintage. Brady’s of Austin, for instance, carries a collection of authentic period lighting as well as offering repair and hard-to-find parts. There are clock and watch repair shops and nostalgic pharmacies, as well as a hospital and extensive medical professional complex immediately north of Bryker Woods.
Barton Creek Mall, with over 180 stores including premium retailers such as Nordstrom, Dillard’s, The Gap and American Eagle, and many more, is located less than 10 minutes south. Austin’s newest upscale shopping experience, The Domain, is about 15 minutes north. The Domain features such quality retailers Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Free People, Coach, Juicy Couture, and Louis Vuitton, as well as great specialty shops and several restaurants.
Favorite Local Eateries, Live Music and More
Local restaurant favorites include the 34th Street Café and the original Kerbey Lane Café, both known for their unique blend of fresh ingredients and casual, comfortable atmospheres. Nearby Mendola’s Italian Market serves a complete breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu and also features an old-world style market. Their selection of pastries and gelato is also phenomenal.
The neighborhood’s proximity to the University of Texas means that conferences, museums, lectures, film screenings, presentations, and (naturally) Longhorn sports are all close by. The University of Texas hosts speakers, special programs, events, presentations, and has a number of museums featuring diversecollections including literary ephemera, natural history, and fine arts.
The Hole in the Wall and 29th Street Ballroom are two of many venues that often feature live music, and neither is more than about five minutes away from Bryker Woods. The 29th Street Ballroom, with heavy red velvet hung in the entire room, is attached to popular coffee shop Spiderhouse. The 29th Street Ballroom features local acts and some touring bands as well. The Hole in the Wall has been a mainstay of campus area live music for decades, usually featuring some of the best and most popular local acts in town.
