Retail Roundup: Alta Mira Area Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Alta Mira residents enjoy abundant, convenient shopping. Escarpment Village, Austin’s first green retail center features rainwater-harvesting cisterns and solar panels, and is less than ten minutes away. The center hosts more than 25 shops and stores, including a “hybrid” HEB, which incorporates many of the gourmet aspects of Central Market, in addition to Starbucks, Oasis Day Spa, Massage Envy, Eye Tech Optometry, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Allstate Insurance, an Animal Hospital and Tomlinson’s Pet Supplies, among others.

Escarpment Village also has six restaurants. For a casual meal, locals have a choice of several beloved Austin institutions such as Torchy’s Tacos, Waterloo Ice House or Kerbey Lane Cafe (famous for their pancakes and bacon pesto chicken with parmesan mashed potatoes). And following a meal with ice cream at D’Lites, which offers 150 naturally flavored varieties, is always a hit.

Whole Foods Nearby and Lots of Natural Flavor

Arbor Trails, about 10 minutes away, features another 40 stores and restaurants. The 70-acre, 365,000 square foot Arbor Trails has twice won the “Best Real Estate” Award from the Austin Business Journal.

A few of the fine stores and services include Costco, Staples, Pure Bikram Yoga, Healthy Pet, The Dental Centre, and Lane Chiropractic. Culinary lovers also browse Mandola’s Italian Market for their selection of delicious, imported products, and the Whole Foods Market in the Arbor Trails shopping center offers both organic and upscale groceries, as well as healthful prepared foods.

There are two other major shopping centers within 15 minutes or less of the neighborhood — Sunset Valley Market Fair and the posh Barton Creek Square Mall. Together, these shopping centers host more than 250 department stores, retailers, services, and local merchants.

Tempting Fresh Food — Fine-Dining or Casual

While downtown Austin offers a dizzying selection of excellent dining choices, there are plenty of nearby places to choose from. District Kitchen + Cocktails is a quintessential Alta Mira restaurant that captures the rustic liveliness of the neighborhood. The restaurant partners with local farmers to serve only the freshest, highest quality foods, complemented by an incredible assortment of wines, beers, and craft cocktails, all in a rustic-chic setting. A popular choice is Colorado lamb chops drizzled with a blueberry demi-glace and served with cranberry almond wild rice.

For a more casual meal, the Galaxy Café serves organic, locally farmed food in a sleek, unfussy atmosphere. Galaxy Café is open for breakfast lunch and dinner, with a brunch option on Sundays. One of the popular dinner options is prosciutto-grilled chicken, a free-range chicken breast basted in a homemade citrus marinade and generously topped with balsamic roasted tomatoes, thinly sliced prosciutto, and fresh basil.

Unforgettable Nights at the Movies

There are plenty of entertainment options within easy reach, and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is just a few minutes away. The Alamo serves a full menu and a selection of beer and wine as the audience enjoys their movie. The Alamo Drafthouse features many interactive movie and music events, including wildly popular Movie Quote-Along screenings and retro Music Video Sing-Alongs. A frosty beer, a juicy burger, and a raucous crowd will make any movie outing unforgettable.
