Mount Bonnell is an exclusive central Austin neighborhood with waterfront homes, private boat docks, incredible views of the city and beautifully maintained homes. Residents enjoy the lakefront lifestyle right in the heart of the city. Located just 15 minutes from downtown and only 25 minutes from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Mount Bonnell gives the feeling of being very far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, while still living within minutes of one of the greatest entertainment districts in the country.
With the Austin Country Club as one of Mount Bonnell’s focal points, resident members often get together for a variety of outdoor activities and exquisite dining. Founded in 1899, the private club is one of the oldest in Texas and home to a 190 acre, 18-hole Pete Dye design golf course. Membership to the club includes use of the golf course, 10 lighted tennis courts, a heated swimming pool, fitness facility, 57 boat slips and a large clubhouse. Members enjoy a variety of benefits, including social functions, tournaments and fine dining.
Bright Leaf Nature Preserve and Exemplary Schools
Another of Austin’s jewels, the Bright Leaf Nature Preserve, is also located nearby. Situated on more than 200 acres of pristine, natural space within the city limits, the preserve offers guided hiking tours on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month.
In spite of the area’s other attractions, Mount Bonnell itself is the highlight of the neighborhood, with its panoramic views of the downtown skyline, Lake Austin and the Highway 360 Bridge. As the highest point within the city limits, the quaint pavilion at Mount Bonnell’s summit has unobstructed city views, making it a popular picnic spot dating as far back as the 1850s.
Known for more than just an abundance of outdoors recreation, Mount Bonnell is well regarded as a great place to receive a quality education. Children attend some of the best schools in the city, including Highland Park Elementary, Lamar Middle School and McCallum High School. Highland Park Elementary has consistently been rated “Exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency. Lamar Middle School and McCallum High School are both designated as Fine Arts Academies, offering advanced art courses and an accelerated arts curriculum.
A Real Community in a Tranquil and Convenient Location
The neighborhood also has an active social calendar. Proudly bringing everyone together for community events throughout the year, The Mount Bonnell Shores Homeowner’s Association hosts an annual Halloween Parade and costume contest, an Independence Day Parade and celebration and a neighborhood Christmas Party.
The Mount Bonnell community is comprised of smaller subdivisions, notably The Island on Mount Bonnell and Mount Bonnell Shores. With development dating back to the early 1970s, construction in the area continues today. Ranging from affordable 1,300 square foot homes to sprawling luxury estates with over 11,000 square feet of living space priced in excess of $4 million, there are a variety of real estate listings for sale in Mount Bonnell.
Conveniently located, residents here take their pick from a host of grocery shopping and high-end retail options. In addition, some of Austin’s most critically acclaimed chefs and restaurants are nearby.
Weekends in Mount Bonnell are always full of outdoor fun and water sports with boaters and water-skiers taking full advantage of the neighborhood’s location on the shores of Lake Austin. “That’s really the big draw of this place,” remarks Harner. “On one side you have Lake Austin, and on the other you have Bright Leaf and Mount Bonnell. I’ve been here for 18 years, and I know every one of my neighbors. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in this city.”
