October in Austin: ACL Festival, Texas Book Festival and Formula 1

See some of the biggest names in music perform at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Or bid on a once-in-a-lifetime meal prepared by one of the Austin’s top chefs. Or, maybe your October calls for a binge of world premier movies.

The options abound in Austin this October.

Then, it all gets capped off by big Halloween festivities at the end of the month (check out a list of those parties here.)

Here are some of the best events around.
Oct. 2: Like wine and food? The Arboretum presents a fun option: Wine Down Wednesdays. Their monthly event involves four stations offering food, wine and music.

Oct. 3-15, 10-12:  Music fans from around the globe converge on Austin for the 13th annual Austin City Limits Music Festival at Zilker Park. The two weekend lineup includes Eminem, Pearl Jam, Outkast, Beck and dozens of other bands.

Oct. 9: Imagine a once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience created by one of Austin’s best chefs. Then, imagine that the money you spend goes to educating the next generation about healthy foods. That’s how it works at the Edible Austin Chef Auction charity event. The live auction package bidding starts at $2,000. Silent auction bidding starts at $75.

Oct. 10-12: Flashback to the era of sweet muscle cars and sportsters. Now imagine them all racing. That’s the U.S. Vintage Racing National Championship coming back to the Circuit of the Americas. The three-day event features more than 600 vintage race cars from around the globe.

Oct. 18-19: Revel in an abundance of Celtic heritage as people from across Central Texas gather in Austin for the Austin Celtic Festival. Irish, Scottish and Breton music will play on four stages, along with dancing, storytelling and sheep herding demonstrations.

Oct. 23-30: Experience the starpower of Austin’s ever-growing film scene as actors, directors and others in the filmmaking industry gather for the Austin Film Festival. The festival features several world premieres.

Oct. 23-26: Horror film enthusiasts and heavy metal fans unite for the Housecore Horror Film Festival. Now in its second year, the festival features a reunion of Texas Chainsaw Massacre actors and actresses as well as some of the biggest names in heavy metal music, such as Phil Anselmo’s Superjoint Ritual and Danzig.

Oct. 25-26: Add dozens of titles to your reading list, meet authors and explore the latest of the literary world in the Lone Star State and the Texas Book Festival. The event includes panel discussions, cooking demonstrations, live music and dozens of book vendors. Among big names this year are Martin Amis, Joyce Carol Oates, Ziggy Marley, Nicholas Kristof and Norman Lear.

Oct. 31-Nov. 2: Rev up those engines. It’s time for one of racing’s biggest events: The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. The race brings in 250,000 people or more, as high-tech and high-speed cars zip around the state-of-the-art track.
