Onion Creek: Why We Love This Neighborhood

If you’re looking for a neighborhood that has beautiful, well-maintained homes, a vibrant community, a country club with a championship golf course, easy access for commuting and is surrounded by nature, look no further than Onion Creek. Located in the southernmost part of Travis county, just east of the 1-35 corridor, this beautiful area is home to a little over 1000 households, but has a homey, close-knit feel.

We’ve called Onion Creek home since 2009 and even though there are probably a million reasons to love it, for us, the best one is the strong sense of community. It’s such an active place; there’s always something to do, and there’s always a friendly face to do it with. We know and love everyone on our block, and the feeling is shared by neighbors who have been here for years as well as those who have moved in more recently.

If it’s natural beauty you’re searching for, Onion Creek surrounds the development on three sides and hundreds of spectacular, mature trees populate the neighborhood. There’s always a beautiful spot to go for a walk or run in.

While Onion Creek’s location makes it a “hidden gem,” the easy access to I-35 means it’s just a short drive away to downtown Austin.

There’s Always Something Fun to Do

What makes our community truly special is how active it is. With 27 holes of championship golf in the neighborhood, golf is a big part of the Onion Creek lifestyle. But there’s also tennis with six lighted courts, and an amazing fitness center that has cardio and strength-building equipment, as well as workout classes with professional trainers. Summers are a perfect time to cool off in the Junior Olympic sized pool and families love to splash around in the baby pool.

Throughout the year, numerous events provide opportunities for gathering and having fun with friends and neighbors. Both the neighborhood association and the Onion Creek Club sponsor activities throughout the year. One of our favorites is the Christmas golf cart parade, and this year we had 60 decorated golf carts cruise around the neighborhood, taking in the Christmas light displays and stopping for the occasional cup of hot chocolate offered by a friendly neighbor. There’s also a 4th of July parade, and the annual big Super Bowl party is also tons of fun — regardless of who’s playing!

Chances are the neighbors will usually have something great planned, but if they don’t, you can always count on the Onion Creek Club to have a fun activity on the calendar. The Club hosts special golf and tennis events throughout the year, and Maureen and I sponsor a very popular bi-monthly wine tasting dinner. The wine region theme changes each tasting, and we welcome all our neighbors to come out and sample excellent wines paired with delectable offerings from the Club’s chef. We’ve found these gatherings to be the perfect way to meet new neighbors, and to have a fantastic time with old friends.

A Relaxed, Comfortable Atmosphere

Speaking of the Club, we love it because of its relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. You would feel equally at home having a dressed up, fancy night out, as well as a casual dinner relaxing in shorts and a polo shirt. It’s a fun place to meet neighbors for a quick bite or to discuss the day’s round on the links.

The neighborhood has a broad range of family types, from young families to empty nesters to retirees. There’s a wonderful mix of personalities, too.

We’re happy and comfortable here, and we plan to stay in Onion Creek for the rest of our lives. Nothing gives us greater joy than hopping into our golf cart and heading down the street to join dear friends for dinner. Onion Creek is truly an old-fashioned neighborhood with a warm community that just feels like home.
