Retail Roundup: Posada del Rey Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Downtown — just a short walk from Posada del Rey — is bursting with Austin’s best shopping, dining, and entertainment.

In the nearby 2nd Street shopping district, some of Austin’s most eclectic shops include Eliza Page for jewelry and accessories, and Plain Ivey Jane for fine women’s clothing. For men’s and women’s contemporary fashions, locals head to Estilo. Patagonia sells sportswear and sports gear that is designed to look good and operate at peak efficiency at the same time. BoConcept, Mercury Studios, and Design Within Reach all sell modern and contemporary furniture as well as gorgeous home décor.

When Posada del Rey homeowners are looking for the nearest mainstream retailer, they have plenty of easy options, too. There are nine major malls within a 15-minute drive from home. Together, these shopping centers host more than 600 retailers, department stores, movie theaters, restaurants, local merchants, and services.

Stepping Out to Austin’s Legendary Nightlife

In the Warehouse District, just steps from home, The Gingerman, Elephant Room, ACL Live at the Moody Theater, and the Cedar Street Courtyard are some of Austin’s hottest spots for live music. There are also a number of wildly popular restaurants and bars in the area like Bess Bistro and the Violet Crown Social Club.

Nearby 6th Street is nationally known for its nightclubs and restaurants — many showcasing live music. Some of the most popular spots on 6th Street are the Handlebar, Whislers, Jackalope, Iron Cactus, and the venerable Maggie Mae’s.

Just around the corner from 6th Street on Red River, there are a number of clubs that also present original live music many nights of the week. The most well known, and the largest, is Stubbs — a place as well respected for its excellent sight lines, acoustics, and bookings as it is for its delicious barbecue.

Healthy and Deeply Delicious Asian Fusion

Less than a 10-minute walk, Koriente Restaurant offers delicious Asian-inspired dishes made to be affordable, fast, and healthy. Each dish was designed to keep calories from soaring out of sight and to be less heavy in fats, refined sugars, or ingredients like MSG or salt.  All of the vegetables used in the restaurant are fresh and prepped daily on site. Among popular items on the menu are the hummus rolls and Mixmix Bibimbap (which is fun to say, too).

Mixmix Bibimbap is freshly sliced carrots, cucumbers, cabbage, red cabbage, red bell peppers, and organic baby greens ringed by tender steamed rice that can be enhanced with beef, chicken, or tofu — and maybe some avocado or an egg as well.

Chili Cheese Fries, Curry Ketchup Bratwurst and a Bloody Mary Brunch

Downtown Austin is full of great places to eat. Some of the best hamburgers and chili cheese fries in Austin are available at 6th Street watering hole Casino El Camino. There’s not another bloody mary in town that will beat one of the delicious and fiery concoctions the Casino whips up on a weekend morning. And there’s enough celery, bacon, blue cheese and the rest for a person to call it brunch.

The Best Wurst sausage and hot dog food cart has been receiving rave reviews from diners since they sold their first brat. Don’t miss out on the curry ketchup or unbeatable sauerkraut, either.

And for a big date night, there are more fine dining restaurants within walking distance than any other place in town. Parkside, Swift’s Attic Gastropub, Eddie V’s Prime Seafood, and the Four Season’s TRIO restaurant are just a few of the many.
