As the snow melts and bulbs begin to bloom, residents look forward to getting back into their gardens and boosting their home’s curb appeal. This month offers plenty of opportunities to celebrate the arrival of spring. The Reeves-Reed Arboretum pays homage to Earth Day and Daffodil Day while the New Providence Garden Club hosts an informative evening that will inspire you to dust off your green thumb. If you’d prefer to reap the rewards of a rich harvest without the work, you’re in luck. The Summit Farmers Market opens in late-April. Free tax counseling and preparation for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention to those 60+, is available at SAGE Eldercare, located at 290 Broad Street, Summit, on Thursdays through April 12, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. SAGE will host IRS-trained volunteer tax preparers from AARP. Area residents in Essex, Morris, Somerset, and Union Counties do not need to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use the service. Summit Farmer’s Market resumes and is pleased to once again give back to those in need. The G.I.F.T. (Give It Fresh Today) Program will celebrate its 7th season this year. This community initiative is looking for volunteers to assist with donations every Sunday of the Market. Every week hundreds of pounds of fresh produce and prepared foods are distributed through our partners: G.R.A.C.E. (Giving & Receiving Assistance for our Community’s Essentials), S.H.I.P. (Summit Helping Its People), St. Teresa’s Loaves and Fishes (all based in Summit) and St. Ann’s Soup Kitchen. To learn more about the program and to sign up, click here.
