A Golfer’s Paradise by Don January and Billy Martindale
The jewel of the Great Hills Country Club is its championship golf course. Built in 1971, the 18-hole Great Hills course was designed by PGA legend Don January alongside architect Billy Martindale. Here, club members enjoy a golfing experience that is at once challenging and beautiful.
Designed to enhance its surrounding environment, the course follows the natural hills and contours of the rolling landscape; in turn, golfers note that the course’s elevation changes set it apart from other courses they’ve played. The entire course offers breathtaking views of Northwest Austin’s hilly horizon, but the final nine holes on the backside take this course to another level of mesmerizing beauty. Here, the holes wind along picturesque creeks and streams, bringing a sense of scenic tranquility to the game.
Don’t be fooled by its beauty; this challenging course requires power and precision. At 6,599 yards, it features three par five holes and three par threes. The course is especially beneficial for those looking to practice in varying wind strengths. For beginners and novices still getting a handle on the basics, the club offers a wide variety of group and private lessons for men, women and children ages six and up.
In 2001, the club added Champions tiff greens that are fast, consistent and well kept. Other amenities include free tees and towels with every golf cart, water at every other hole, a practice range and a pro shop that offers equipment, accessories, club fitting and in-house club repair by PGA-certified professionals.
Eight Tennis Courts and a Relaxing Poolside Cabana
Great Hills offers an impressive tennis complex and a comprehensive program for its loyal tennis lovers. With an impressive assortment of clinics, private lessons, camps and socials, there are plenty of opportunities to get into the game. Great Hills also offers men’s, women’s, and mixed USTA league play and WTTA league play for women.
During the summer, members at Great Hills enjoy the cool refreshing water of the club’s junior Olympic-size pool, where they relax in poolside lounge chairs, soak up some rays and work on their tans. For the sun-shy, two large trees provide plenty of shade. During the summer months, the club Cabana offers simple yet tasty choices like burgers, hot dogs and sandwiches. Adults can also imbibe a flavorful margarita or a frosty cold beer while the kids have their fun on the water slide.
With a focus on water safety, Great Hills Country Club offers private, semi-private and group swim lessons for little ones during the summer. Instruction covers everything from basic skills and proper swim technique to mastering the butterfly, backstroke, breast stroke and freestyle swimming.
Competitive Swimming for All Ages
The Gators Swim Team is a fun way for children and juniors between the ages of 4 and 18 to participate in competitive swimming. The summer program is run by parent volunteers who enjoy working with kids and connecting with families in their community. Great Hills Aquatic RUSH is another competitive swim program at Great Hills with expert coaches and a parent-run board. RUSH aims to promote self-esteem, technique and endurance in its young athletes who participate in swim competitions throughout Austin and surrounding cities.
The Great Hills Masters swimming program offers adult swimmers a series of workouts directed by Aquatic RUSH coaches that are tailored to the specific needs and skill levels of participants. In a session, workouts can range in distance from 1,000 to over 3,500 meters.
