North Shoal Creek Real Estate: Peaceful, Affordable Convenience

Located in Northwest Austin, North Shoal Creek is an established suburban community which offers diverse shopping and dining options, award-winning schools, and affordable homes.

North Shoal Creek enjoys proximity to major highways that make getting to almost anywhere in town very convenient, but the neighborhood is tucked away, with quiet streets and pedestrian-friendly amenities including integrated bus routes, biking trails and sidewalks. Downtown Austin is about 15 to 20 minutes away, and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is about a 25-minute drive.

Homes in the neighborhood include a mix of affordable condominiums, townhouses, and single-family dwellings, which typically range in size from about 1,000 square feet to over 2,500 square feet of living space. Much of North Shoal Creek was developed in the 1970s, and many of the homes here have been updated and remodeled with modern design features.

Families love North Shoal Creek for both the family-friendly amenities, such as the newly remodeled Austin Public Library branch and the Playland Skate Center — one of the last places in town kids and adults alike can visit a roller rink and skate to their hearts content. Conveniently, Chaparral Ice, Austin’s only all-year ice skating rink, is also adjacent to the neighborhood in the Northcross Shopping Center.

“It’s a quiet but busy little spot,” says Chris Wallace, a product developer at IBM who has been living in the neighborhood since 2007. “Lots of people think it’s just another suburban neighborhood, but there’s lots of interesting things around, like the great parks and plenty of bars and restaurants. It’s a neighborhood that truly appreciates and celebrates the residents.”

Life with Grace, Peace, and a Little Excitement, Too

Located a few blocks from Anderson Lane, Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park is a large public park that serves the North Shoal Creek neighborhood. Spread across thirty acres of greenery, this iconic park provides North Shoal Creek with an ideal setting for picnics and large group gatherings. The park offers eight barbecue grills and almost 50 picnic tables, along with three different pavilions available for reservations. Families love relaxing on the grass, or next to the picturesque duck pond.

“The park is just a great place to be on weekends,” says neighborhood resident Ashley Zeppeli, who is usually at the park for a morning or evening jog, as well as an occasional leisurely picnic under the shade with friends and neighbors. “Everyone in the neighborhood loves it. I’ve met most of my neighbors here and we love coming here together to relax.”

Kids especially love the park, with its two separate playgrounds. One is specifically designated for kids ages 5 and up, while the other is a smaller playscape for toddlers. The larger playscape offers an incline ramp that ends up at the top with a slide, as well as four swings. Both playscapes are large enough to accommodate many children without feeling crowded. Past the playgrounds is the junior Olympic-size swimming pool. There are also four tennis courts, two basketball courts, and a volleyball court, and plenty of spacious, open fields for any sport.

Award-Winning Schools and Plenty of Shopping, Dining and Entertainment

Students in North Shoal Creek attend award-winning Austin Independent School District schools. Pillow Elementary has been rated “Academically Acceptable” by the Texas Education Agency and was awarded designation as a National Blue Ribbon School. Anderson High School is also rated “Academically Acceptable,” and is one of the top-ranked schools academically in the nation by publications such as the Washington Post, Newsweek, and Texas Monthly. It is also the only school in Austin ISD to have the International Baccalaureate Program.

The nearby Pillow Playground, attached to Pillow Elementary School, is another popular local spot. The 7-acre park features two playgrounds: one is shaded; the second sunny playground is more elaborate. There are also two basketball courts, picnic areas, and a large recreational field. The park is surrounded by a gravel track where locals often jog, and there are many fitness stations for stretching exercises. On evenings many locals enjoy taking a stroll around the park with their dogs.

Also conveniently located, shopping and dining options in the area are wonderfully diverse. The nearby Village Shopping Center has the Alamo Drafthouse and many other stores and shops, and bordering Burnet Road and Anderson Lane are rich with a large selection of restaurants including everything from Tex-Mex comfort food to Japanese, Indian and Korean cuisines, from upscale dining to neighborhood pubs.
