Hyde Park Real Estate: Own a Piece of Austin History
Established in the late 1800s, Hyde Park is historically significant as Austin’s first suburb. Hyde Park’s enduring popularity is no surprise. The neighborhood is located just 10 minutes from downtown, 6 minutes from the University of Texas, and allows a short 20-minute drive to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. People living in Hyde Park enjoy the convenience of easy access to everything in Austin.
In addition to an abundance of nearby shopping and dining, the neighborhood is also home to the Hancock Golf Course, the oldest golf course in the state of Texas. Founded in 1899, this beautifully maintained public 9-hole course is the perfect weekend getaway-next-door for seasoned pros and recreational golfers alike. Historic and affordable, Hancock charges very reasonable green fees.

Hyde Park has its own post office, eclectic locally owned businesses, an art museum, historic sites, and Shipe Park, a charming two-acre public park with giant shade trees, a community swimming pool and tons of amenities. But what truly makes this neighborhood special is its unique spirit and distinctive architectural charm.
“A lot of the houses in Hyde Park are from the turn of the century; in fact, this area recently became an historic district, which protects it from real estate developers and teardowns,” says John Hindman, a woodworker and owner of Red River Restorations. John, a longtime resident of Hyde Park, specializes in the handcrafted restoration of older, historical homes throughout Austin. “Builders don’t make high quality houses like these anymore. They have been built to last and have great energy, history and character. Even better, many of these old real estate treasures are updated with modern plumbing, electric wiring, air conditioning, insulation and state-of-the-art technology without detracting from their old-world charm and beauty.”
An Eclectic Mix of Homes
Older and historic homes in this area generally consist of ornate late 19th-century designs in the Tudor Revival and Queen Anne architectural styles, such as the Oliphant-Walker House at 3900 Avenue C, and captivating bungalows built between the late 1920s and mid-1930s, like the Charles William Ramsdell House at 4002 Avenue H. The neighborhood covers a broad spectrum, from its well known cozy bungalows to spacious estates with more than 5,000 square feet of living space.
A Friendly Neighborhood with a Proud History and Great Vibe
When people talk about Austin, they rave about the music, the culture, and the warm and friendly people who live here, and the area is considered a perfect microcosm of what makes Austin great. It seems almost impossible that such a fine collection of houses in a quiet and wooded area could be tucked into the heart of Austin, and yet it is. This neighborhood is filled with friendly people who truly care about their community and enjoy an active lifestyle.
“Hyde Park and its surrounding area is really bike friendly,” says Arron Casper, a graduate of the MediaTech Institute who made his home in Hyde Park while attending classes. “I could bike to class if I wanted to. It was a bit of a trip but I didn’t mind, I loved seeing all the old trees and beautiful old properties. You can walk or bike to just about anything you need, and other than going to classes, I mostly just hung out down the street from home. It’s the kind of place you don’t get tired of.”
Hyde Park has stood the test of time as an historic neighborhood of classically beautiful homes, towering majestic trees, and has a well-earned reputation as a great place to live. “Hyde Park is about so much more than just the real estate or houses,” John Hindman says. “It’s a really cool, eclectic neighborhood to live in. This is a very strong community and people here are passionate about protecting and preserving what they love.”
