You’ll find a handful of local businesses in Niederwald, but for groceries and routine shopping residents head to Kyle’s Target, HEBPlus!, Walmart and Lowe’s hardware, all about 15 minutes from home. Lockhart also offers many fun annual activities to keep families busy. One of the most popular is Lockhart’s Chisholm Trail Roundup. It all begins with “BBQ Capital of Texas” Barbeque & Chili Championship. The cook-off is an International Barbeque Cooking Association (IBCA) event. The Association annually crowns a world champion. Other activities during the five day Roundup include a Cowboy Breakfast cooked over open flame on the courthouse square, the queen’s coronation, a grand parade, contests, western days reenactments, great food, live music, and vendor booths.

Los Flores Mexican restaurant is mom-and-pop joint so popular that diners drive from all over Central Texas to savor the delicious, freshly made food and the warm, friendly service. For such a small place, Las Flores’ menu is extensive, including breakfast tacos, spicy chicken fajitas, enchilada platters, dinner taco platters and authentic Mexican dishes like piping hot menudo. Relax in the Great Outdoors Tubing Down the San Marcos River
There’s something magical about floating down the cool waters of the San Marcos River – you really have to experience it to understand it. Access to the San Marcos River near its source in San Marcos is less than 30 minutes away. And there’s more ways to have fun in the sun on the river than tubing. Swimming, fishing, and boating on the river are also popular leisure activities.
Outdoor enthusiasts also enjoy nearby Lockhart State Park, just 20 minutes from home. This 250-acre park features campsites and group amenities, and the only Texas Parks and Wildlife staffed golf course. The course is nine artfully designed holes, beautiful to play on foot or in a cart. And when visiting Lockhart to indulge in its legendary barbeque, the Lockhart City Park is a smaller park in the center of Lockhart near the beautiful, historic county seat in the center of town, and a great place to sit and relax after a big meal. The park also provides residents with recreational sport facilities for softball, soccer and basketball, as well as picnic areas and covered pavilions for private gatherings.
Residents of Niederwald have one more big bonus – living less than 15 minutes away from the newly opened Circuit of the Americas Formula 1 track and event center.
