Wilshire Wood Real Estate: Seven Decades of Charm, Convenience and Value

Wilshire Wood has earned its reputation as one of Austin’s most popular neighborhoods for over seven decades. With its central Austin location just east of Hyde Park, Wilshire Wood provides its residents easy access to downtown as well as local shopping and restaurants. In addition, the community is nestled into a parkland setting, creating an active lifestyle that coexists with nature and the wide world of conveniences and amenities that only exist in the center of a vibrant city.

This prestigious location allows homeowners to be in the heart of downtown within just 5 minutes and to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in less than 20 minutes. The charming, meandering tree-lined streets, large wooded front yards and blend of ranch and cottage-style homes is the attractive prototype that new upscale suburban subdivisions strive to match. In fact, Wilshire Wood planners used these “modern” concepts long ago. A historical neighborhood with its oldest home built in 1870, the majority of construction in Wilshire Wood started in 1941 and was completed in 1964.

Historical Parks and Golf Mixed with Brand New Development

Green space is seemingly everywhere throughout Wilshire Wood. Historic Patterson Park, located on its eastern edge, provides amenities such as a picnic shelter, playground, tennis courts and a pool. Within walking distance to the west are the historic (1899) Hancock Municipal Golf Course, a jogging trail, and community center. The development at Mueller offers brand new and extensive parks with ponds, water features, an amphitheater, and trails built into its plan. The Wilshire Wood/Delwood One Neighborhood Association is active, with block captain volunteers for each street.

“I love being so close to downtown Austin and the close-knit neighborhood that Wilshire Wood offers,” says area resident Larry Buttera. “The homes have distinctive personalities, as do the residents.”

Hundreds of Stores and Restaurants, Quality Schools Nearby

A short trip north to the Mueller shopping district provides access to larger retailers, such as Best Buy, Home Depot, and Bed, Bath and Beyond, as well as countless others in the redevelopment of Robert Mueller’s airport property. Mueller is Austin’s former airport and is in the midst of active development, with more restaurants and shops opening all the time.

In addition, there are six major shopping centers within 15 minutes or less. Altogether, these retail malls represent more than 600 department stores, local and national retailers, movie theaters, restaurants, and more.

The schools that serve Wilshire Wood are also convenient. Students living in Wilshire Woods reside in the Austin Independent School District and attend Maplewood Elementary School, Kealing Middle School and McCallum High School. The Texas Education Agency rates all three schools as “Academically Acceptable.”

An Elegant Dance with Nature and the Enjoyment of an Active Lifestyle

The quaint community of Wilshire Wood is one of the most coveted places to live in Austin. Amid the buzz of Austin’s rapid development over the past seven decades, Wilshire Wood hasn’t missed a step in its elegant and serene dance with nature, continually improving on its original ideals.

“Besides the quiet lifestyle and friendly neighbors, I love all of the great restaurants around here.” says Buttera with a smile. “We’ve become regulars at Hoover’s, and I also enjoy going downtown for the awesome variety of live music. This is a great place to live and it really does have everything anyone could ever ask for.”
