Balcones Village Real Estate: A Charming Luxury Community

Located in Northwest Austin, west of Highway 183 and south of Anderson Mill Road, Balcones Village is an affluent neighborhood offering residents soothing rolling hill vistas and a distinguished golf community. True to its name, the neighborhood evokes a charming village feel with its winding trails and majestic homes on spacious lots, in the middle of an opulent tree-lined golf course setting. There are about 500 houses nestled within the lush landscape.

Downtown Austin is less than 15 minutes away, and for vacations or business trips, the Austin-Bergstrom airport is a quick 25-minute drive. Balcones Village is also conveniently located near many of North Austin’s most popular dining and shopping spots, including The Arboretum and Lakeline Mall, two of Austin’s most frequented shopping centers.

Development in the area began in 1968 and continued through 2010. Mature trees and landscaping make the serene golf course community seem miles from the city. Ranch-style homes and split levels on spacious lots are predominant, while home sizes range from 1,535 square feet up to 6,500 square feet.

Homeowners are also attracted to the neighborhood’s well-regarded schools. Balcones Village is less than 10 minutes away from schools such as Spicewood Elementary and Canyon Vista Middle school, both highly rated by the Texas Education Agency, and Westwood High school, which was ranked one of the top high schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report in 2013.

Two Championship Golf Courses by Tom Cotton

The centerpiece of the community is The Balcones Country Club. Membership at the Balcones Country Club is by invitation only, making it an exclusive experience highlighted by deluxe amenities such as the two heated junior Olympic pools, spacious banquet rooms and clubhouses, in addition to 10 tennis courts.

The country club also features two 18-hole golf courses, the Balcones Golf Course and the Spicewood Golf Course, both designed by Tom Cotton. There are two golf associations, one for men and one for women, as well as a driving range, a spa and therapy center and two pro shops. Besides golf, recreational spots such as parks and walking trails are sprinkled throughout this area, where neighbors frequently meet up and relax together.

“I’m friends with all my neighbors,” says Vikki Jacobi, a member of the Balcones Village/Spicewood Homeowners Association committee. The country club organizes events such as parades throughout the year, and residents always have a chance to come together at a variety of gaming and activity clubs. “My favorite time is Christmas,” says Vikki. “We’re famous for our Christmas tree displays. It’s a big party. Everyone brings food and we all decorate trees together. It’s a fun tradition that makes everyone feels like family.”

Country Club Living at its Best

With Austin’s sunny climate, there are plenty of great days to tee off under the sun. On a weekend at the Spicewood Golf Course, David Mann, the chief marketing officer at a medical software company, slices a golf ball without a care in the world, happily watching it sail past an ocean of trees and grass. Beside him is his 9-year-old son Matt, cheering him on, while David’s wife Carol lounges by the pool.

“We’re a golfing family,”David says. “As a golfer, I can’t imagine being anywhere else in Austin.” David especially enjoys the high standards of the club. The courses, he says, are meticulously kept, and the staff is highly experienced and very professional. Balcones Country Club has its own golf academy, where Matt is a junior member. “I’ve met lots of golf nuts here,” David says. “They are some very professional people: doctors, lawyers, business professionals, you name it. We play in tournaments together and now I’m friends with some very elite people. It’s a great way to network.”

His wife, however, enjoys the course for a different reason. “Try walking around during sunset,” Carol laughs. “The Spicewood course is actually pretty romantic during the golden hour.”

First-Class Fun in the Sun

Balcones Village is a highly sought-after location due to the architectural beauty of its homes, the excellent schools and numerous amenities nearby. The premier golfing community and abundance of recreational amenities allow residents of Balcones Village to enjoy a very active outdoor lifestyle.

“I love the easy recreation right in the neighborhood,” says Regina Wiley, an auditor at Apple. “Since I moved here 5 years ago, I’ve never had to motivate myself to go to the gym. I just knock on a few doors and we’re playing tennis in no time.”

Regina is a mother of 6-year-old twin girls. Regina says that playdates organized by the Balcones Moms’ Club have saved her countless hours. “I never have to make time to relax under the shade,” she beams. “The schools are great, and my husband really enjoys the golf courses. We’re relaxed and having lots of fun, but that’s the point of living in Balcones Village. Everyone has fun here.”
