Village at Western Oaks: A Dynamic, Convenient and Enchanting Neighborhood

Lush trees, huge yards and flourishing, mature landscapes are signature amenities of the Village of Western Oaks, an enchanting neighborhood southwest of Austin. Conveniently located, the heart of downtown Austin is just 15 minutes north, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport can be reached in 20 minutes.

A dynamic community, the Village at Western Oaks is always active, with neighbors enjoying daily walks on the wide streets and trails, as well as weekly gatherings at the park and annual neighborhood-wide events.

Diverse Outdoor Recreation and Conveniently Located Schools

Located at the center of the Village at Western Oaks, Dick Nichols Park features more than 150 acres with a playground, a kids’ splash pad, community pool, picnic areas and extensive paved trails for walking, running and biking. The junior Olympic-sized swimming pool provides a cooling respite after a game of tennis, basketball or softball at the park. Western Oaks Karst Preserve offers more trails — and for more adventuresome residents — limestone caves to explore.

Nature lovers travel a quick 5 minutes down the road to The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, where thousands of native plant and wildflower specimens are protected and preserved.

Also just a few minutes away, cyclists and rollerbladers of all strengths take advantage of the Veloway — three miles of protected, 23-foot wide track wrapped around the neighborhood in a serene, hill country landscape. The silky smooth pavement is suited for training sessions as well as for families looking to enjoy life on two wheels in a safe, controlled environment.

Not only is an abundance of outdoor recreation within close proximity, schools for the neighborhood kids are close as well. Depending on where in the neighborhood a home is situated, students attend one of two conveniently located Austin Independent School District elementary schools, middle schools and high schools.

“The neighborhood is a mixture of original homeowners and lots of new people who’ve made their home here over the years,” says Randy Kolb, President of the Western Oaks Property Owners Association, who has lived in the neighborhood with his wife Grace-Marie and their four children for the past 14 years. “Neighbors have always had a good spirit of volunteerism to keep the neighborhood a nice place to live.”

A Perfect Day in Austin

Filling water bottles to take on an exploration of Village at Western Oaks Karst Preserve, nine acres of wildlife habitat that sit atop the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone, a mom calls for her husband and two teenagers who come bounding down the stairs, excited to explore the sinkholes and photograph the natural caves.

The fall day is comfortably cool, and both kids work their way through Wade Sink, Hideout Sink and Goat Cave, snapping shots of the natural scenery. As attention turns to dinner, the family unanimously votes for Kerbey Lane Café, an Austin original for fresh, local food. Father and son love it there, and plan to split an appetizer of cowboy queso and then devour their own Black Angus cheeseburgers, while the girls enjoy enchiladas and quesadillas. After a perfect dinner, they laugh while discussing a return to the restaurant in the morning for  pumpkin pancakes.

“We love this location because it has that Austin feel,” says Phillip Bachus, general manager of Kerbey Lane Café Southwest, who has been with the innovative restaurant for the past 12 years. “I grew up in this area and it’s a fun group, and just the best mix of people.”

Easy Access to an Active Lifestyle

Multiple parks, extensive shopping and entertainment, and proximity to downtown and the airport make the Village at Western Oaks the ideal neighborhood for those who value a balance of suburban quiet and vibrant city life.

Locals head to nearby Barton Creek Square for the AMC cinema and over 180 retail stores, while the nearby Costco and Whole Foods are popular for daily necessities. Torchy’s Tacos, Waterloo Ice House and Cypress Grill Louisiana Café are just a handful of the many delicious dining options in the area. Residents here treasure living on quiet streets within walking distance of community schools, a pool, and leafy trails shaded by a canopy of oak trees — and it’s all just a few minutes away from central Austin and all it has to offer.

“Newcomers to the Austin area often wait for years for the right house to come up to move into Western Oaks specifically,” says Kolb, also a computer programmer. “They come here for the convenient location, well-kept neighborhood, amenities and friendly, caring neighbors.”
