Long Canyon Real Estate: A “Heavenly Haven” of Luxurious Living in Austin
Imagine finding a hidden treasure of custom homes with panoramic canyon views nestled in a private community and surrounded by the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. Add in spacious, wooded, estate-sized lots of 1-2 acres and the tranquility of living amongst nature in high style.
Located in northwest Austin, Long Canyon blends lush green surroundings and breathtaking views to raise the definition of rural living to a new height. The commute to downtown is about a 20-minute drive and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is only 30 minutes away, yet all of nature’s wonders are just a step outside.
Development of Long Canyon began in 1983 and continued through 2007. The homes here feature a wide variety of architectural styles and custom appointments while many offer sweeping views of the greenbelt or preserve. Home sizes range from just under 2,000 to over 6,000 square feet of living space, with many of the larger, more updated homes (particularly those that also include premium views) commanding prices well over $5 million.
“I just love the fact that we live in such a magnificent neighborhood,” explains long-time resident Matthew Lavare. “We are surrounded by nature in all forms; we have the grand trees and green grass and the canyons are a sight I never get tired of because living here takes me away from the ‘real’ world. Working downtown from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. five days a week is the urban part of my life. While I love to dine and shop there, it is always a pleasure to come back home to Long Canyon. It is our heavenly haven.”

Along with the natural beauty of Long Canyon’s setting and majestic trees, the Long Canyon Homeowners Association maintains a magnificent hike-and-bike trail.
Local outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the easy access to one of Austin’s largest parks, Emma Long Metropolitan Park, less than 10 minutes away. Popular for its lake access and splash pad, City Park, as it is often called, offers over 1,100 acres dedicated to camping facilities, basketball and volleyball courts, 12 miles of trails and a fishing pier. And Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge borders Long Canyon, serving as one of the 14 designated preserves where professional land managers and others come together to implement state-of-the-art habitat management technology. The distinctive landscape shelters many species, providing some of the best habitat for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler.
Just because homeowners in Long Canyon live in the middle of nature’s serene magnificence, doesn’t mean they have to be far away from convenient options for delicious dining and sensational shopping. Quite the contrary. There are over 500 stores and restaurants within a 15-minute drive.
Award-Winning Schools and Outdoor Recreation
Homeowners are also attracted to Long Canyon for its excellent schools. Both Austin Independent School District and Leander ISD serve students here, depending on the specific address of the student. In the AISD section, Highland Park Elementary School received the acclaimed “Exemplary” rating by the Texas Education Agency and is designated as a Blue Ribbon School. The school also received a Gold Performance acknowledgment in attendance and commendations on reading and ELA (English Language Arts), writing, mathematics and science.
McCallum High School earned a Gold Performance acknowledgment for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate results as well as a commendation on the social studies program. In the Leander ISD section, River Place Elementary School received the coveted “Exemplary” rating by the TEA, as did Canyon Ridge and Four Points Middle Schools. TEA ranked both Vandegrift and Cedar Park High Schools as “Recognized.”
Doreen Mulgrew, employed by Emma Long Metropolitan Park and a resident of Long Canyon, considers this area to be the best location in all of Texas. “You can go to the park and bring a boat because we have a boat ramp,” says Doreen. “We have a fantastic swim area and a sandy beach spot on Lake Austin. You can go camping, fishing, swimming, boating or you can take amazing hikes. Some of the best trails are right here in our backyard, so to speak. Of course, you can just lie outside and do simply nothing. The park and the lifestyle, along with the great schools that Long Canyon has given to my family is everything we always dreamed about. We are so happy to live in this amazing community.”
More than Just a Touch of Class
The Long Canyon community has everything a homeowner could possibly want; the area is exceptional in all aspects of living life to its fullest. Considered the “gateway” to the Hill Country northwest of Austin, Long Canyon is conveniently located close to all of Austin’s treasures and pleasures. The singular entrance lends the community an even more private and secluded feeling. The refreshing waters of both Lake Austin and Lake Travis are each quick commutes, as are all the outdoor delights found at the parks and Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge.
“I was born and raised in Texas and moved to Austin with my husband in 1995,” says Patricia Chambers, an ER nurse who works in one of the area’s medical centers and adores living in Long Canyon. “At first, we lived downtown, but we soon realized that we missed what we loved about Texas the most: the openness, the privacy, the scenery, the trails and the lakes. After having a taste of urban living, we decided to move here in 2000. We love every moment of living here. I work in the city and nothing beats coming back home to our part of Texas every day.”
