Enhancing Your Student’s Dorm Room

While college dormitories have come a long way, many still feel more institutional than inviting. To ease students into college life, consider the following suggestions for making the dorm room a place they look forward to returning to at the end of the day.

UPGRADED BEDDING

Getting a great night’s rest is the key to staying healthy and focused. Because mattresses may not be as luxurious as the one a student has at home, consider a mattress topper which adds a layer of comfort. A bedside storage caddy, ideal for holding a cell phone, earbuds, and other items, is a lifesaver if you’re on the top bunk. Speaking of bunks, if you decide to loft the bed, you’ll gain plenty of room for storage or even desk space.

AMBIENT LIGHTING

Never underestimate the power of good lighting. Whether hanging out with friends or studying for an exam late into the evening, ambient lighting can make all the difference. Task lighting helps during those late-night study sessions while the warm glow of string lights adds a festive vibe if students invite classmates to stop by.

COMFORTS OF HOME

An area rug underfoot makes getting up in the morning a bit easier, especially in rooms with cold, hard flooring. They also brighten up drab carpet and offer a chance to add a pop of color and a touch of personality. Items such as toaster ovens, microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeepots also help students keep snacks on hand and within reach, which can save both time and money.

ATTRACTIVE AND INVITING

By making a few quick adjustments, dorm rooms can go from simple to stylish in no time. Removable wallpaper transforms the space without making any permanent changes. Curtains and throw pillows warm up the room and keep it cozy. Low-maintenance indoor plants bring the outdoors in while providing much-needed oxygen.

Leaving kids at college — especially for the first time — can be challenging, but knowing they’re in a space that’s almost as comfortable as the home they left makes everyone feel a bit better.
