Fast Friends and King of the Hill Parties

Two women, neighbors inThe Highland at Crystal Falls, and co-workers at a north Austin software firm, take a lunch break from their jobs in the accounting department. Over sandwiches and iced tea, they discuss the end-of-school party they’re planning for all the kids in their neighborhood. The moms are excited to put together this annual celebration — the kids look forward to it every year.

The women, who met three years ago when both of their families moved into the neighborhood, have become fast friends and both love all of the community activities. This weekend, for example, the neighborhood is hosting a block party, where everyone will bring a potluck dish to share, and parents will take on the kids in a fun but competitive kickball game.

“We do a lot with our neighbors. We hang out in the front yard and socialize,” says McNabb, a Dell employee. “We call them our King of the Hill parties.”
