Lakewood Real Estate: An Active and Affordable Neighborhood Where the Promise of Peace and Tranquility is Fulfilled
Lakewood’s tranquil, peaceful atmosphere not only draws buyers to select Lakewood, it also encourages them to stay — a fact reflected in the neighborhood’s low turnover of homes. Fully developed, only a handful of Lakewood homes are listed for sale each year.
Development began in 1957 and continued through 2008. Lakewood homes include a mix of townhouses, condominiums and single family homes, ranging from cozy two-bedroom homes to roomy, custom-built luxury homes on oversized, tree covered lots.

The neighborhood features abundant amenities. The Lakewood Community Center keeps adult and children’s swimming pools shimmering, and offers lighted tennis and basketball courts, along with a playground and spacious clubhouse.
Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts appreciate the neighborhood’s location adjacent to Emma Long Metropolitan Park. The park boasts twelve miles of trails, volleyball courts, swimming holes, and basketball courts. And just a few moments away, residents can launch their boats from the public boat ramp beneath the scenic 360 Bridge on lovely Lake Austin, or fish from the banks.
Exclusive Shopping, Terrific Schools
Lakewood is an incredible place to live for those who enjoy convenient shopping at some of Austin’s most exclusive retailers. Lakewood is within 15 minutes or less of eight major shopping destinations, including the Domain, Austin’s most luxurious center, just 10 minutes away. Together, they represent more than 700 fine department stores, national and local merchants, movie theaters, boutiques, restaurants, and more.
A great place to create childhood memories, Lakewood is a kid-friendly community served by the Austin Independent School District. Hill Elementary earned an “Exemplary” rating from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and Murchison Middle School and Anderson High School have both been found “Acceptable.” Anderson High School consistently ranks high in gold performance commendations for advanced placement, college readiness, mathematics and social studies.
A Creek Runs Through It
As a gentle little waterfall splashes just a few yards away, families cool off and relax among the turtles, fish and birds — including endangered yellow-cheeked warblers — under a shady canopy of large oaks along the banks of Bull Creek. Next to the park and throughout the Lakewood neighborhood, the savory scents of backyard barbecues mingle with sweet magnolia and mimosa flowers under green centuries-old oaks and pecan trees.
Inside the clubhouse of the nearby Lakewood Community Center, a small group of young moms and youthful elders stretch in a yoga class. Just outside, a few teenagers sunbathe at the center’s adult pool, while a father and son shoot hoops on the basketball court and two women sit to talk after a friendly game of tennis. Excited about hiking tomorrow morning along the scenic 3.5 mile Inga Van Nynatten Memorial Trail at nearby Lower Bull Creek Park, the ladies make plans for a day of shopping downtown, followed by dinner and a movie with their husbands.
“We love the feeling of being secluded and private with the trees, park and hills,” says Elizabeth, who along with her husband Allen, transplanted here from far away Northern England. For Elizabeth and Allen, Lakewood’s parkland paradise lifestyle and convenient 20-minute drive to Austin’s bustling city center for work and pleasure was the perfect fit for their active lives. “It’s like living in the country it’s so quiet, yet we have everything we could ever ask for right here.” says Allen.
Deep Roots and Friendly Neighbors
People who settle in Lakewood often stay for decades, or even a lifetime. Like the magnificent oaks throughout the area, people in Lakewood put down deep roots and they adore living in this quiet and friendly place where neighbors have known each other for decades.
“The people who live here, well… You’d have to dynamite them to get them to move out of here,” laughs Carol Wolf, the General Manager of the Lakewood Homeowner’s Association. “People love it here!”
